Never has this expression been more true when we reflect upon the inspirational and virtuous actions of St. Joseph. Lately, I've been focusing on learning more about this Saint who was given such an important role for loving and protecting the Holy Family. St. Joseph actually never spoke any words throughout the entire Bible, yet today he still remains one of the most influential “messengers” of the Word of God! He's someone I aspire to emulate in my own life.
He was chosen by God for two fairly prominent roles; the earthly father to Jesus and husband to Mary. One might imagine the person chosen for this role would at least get a few words in scripture! Someone who would verbally share their words of wisdom and God’s intentions for a holy life seems likely.
God’s actions also speak louder than words.
Messengers clearly do not need to draw attention to themselves to have a profound impact. It was Joseph’s quiet, trusting disposition and open heart to the power of the Holy Spirit that allowed him to become the greatest earthly protector of Mary and Jesus. He was never given insight into why he was chosen for this important role in the Holy Family, but he remained obedient and honorable in his actions.
I watched a movie recently that highlighted the Nativity and early relationship of Mary and Joseph as they traveled to Bethlehem. We take for granted the details of that truly arduous path they traveled. Both of them were so tired, confused, and anxious. Herod was seeking the first -born children to murder and Joseph had to get Mary to safety. Mary’s condition did not make the journey easy on Joseph as a protector. They never complained. I have a lot to learn from their example.
Although both of them had given their “yes” to visiting angels -they still had human anxiety and some trepidation of the unknown. They were moving in a direction, but not really knowing how they would even finish the trip. The scenes played out by showing them interacting as a newly married husband and wife.
Mary was indeed betrothed to Joseph but, she was still very young, very shy and somewhat awkward in expressing her gratitude to him for his protection. He remained humble, attentive and contemplative. Words exchanged were few and far between them.
Joseph’s humble obedience to God’s plan given by an angel messenger speaks volumes. Especially in today’s world there is such a cry for recognition and accolades. Everyone wants to make sure their good deeds are known so they are respected and admired. Credit and recognition awards social acceptance and success.
Joseph’s behavior as a messenger to the world reflected only an internal conscience that quietly acted out what was simply just and honorable. He lacked any desire to receive recognition for his heroism.
Today we can more openly welcome Jesus into our lives when we open our hearts fully to God as Joseph did. When we let go of the need for attention, fame and recognition we are imitating St. Joseph, the head of the Holy Family. His virtues will direct us and our own families on a surer path toward holiness. St. Joseph can be and should be a spiritual father to all of us. His grace-filled actions really do speak volumes.
