This classic song I’ve been enjoying since it was first released in 1984 not only brings me joy, but definitely puts me in the right frame of mind for the Christmas season.
Every Christmas morning for years I play the same playlist and this one is a family favorite. 10 million downloads and the most streamed song of all time clearly validates that I’m not the only one that loves this song!
Maria Carey was recently lauded as the “Queen of Christmas” during an interview which got me thinking about my own faith journey of embracing the real meaning of Christmas. Her words have had a lasting impact on many generations, religions and cultures. It’s evident that simple words repeated over and over again truly do have power to change our mood.
“I don't want a lot for Christmas There is just one thing I need I don't care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree I just want you for my own More than you could ever know Make my wish come true All I want for Christmas is you I don't want a lot for Christmas There is just one thing I need Don't care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree I don't need to hang my stocking there upon the fireplace Santa Claus won't make me happy with a toy on Christmas Day I just want you for my own More than you could ever know Make my wish come true All I want for Christmas is you
I reflect back in chapter seven of my book when I share how our emotional attachments to the messaging that we see and hear repeatedly through commercials and other social media channels eventually play out in our life choices. – CC, pg. 117
As I’ve matured in my faith the “one thing I need” is Him for my own. The words of this song still remain joyfully attached to so many wonderful celebrations, but quietly my prayer is that He is all I really care about. His Mother is the real “queen of Christmas” because without her “yes” to be being the Blessed Mother of the baby Jesus—there would be no Maria Carey, no presents, no Christmas tree and sadly, no Santa!
So, this year, I’m editing my playlist and putting more songs in there that reflect my spiritual desires so that my family will have more ways to connect more strongly to inspiring words found in songs like O Holy Night, O Come Emmanuel, Silent Night, Joy to the World and so many other classics. These songs played forever in their heads will play out in their life choices-hopefully leading their souls to the best choices. Some day when I’m not around to guide them; my deepest wish is that all they’ll want is Him!
